What is the Greater-Region ?

Not to be confused with the UEBL (Belgium–Luxembourg Economic Union, 1921, the actual first step of the E.U. building…), the Greater-Region (“Grande Région”) , at first “Saar-Lor-Lux“, became wider and wider, bringing together administrative zones around Grand-duchy of Luxembourg.

It is more a cultural-oriented organisation, that makes easiest the daily live of the huge population that is centred on the Grand-duchy incredible economic and financial prosperity. Indeed, above the 672.000 resident (2024)half of it are not holding Luxembourg nationality – there are more than one million families that rely, partially or totally, on salaries due to their Luxembourg-based employments.

~137.000 residents within the Grand-duchy are coming from the E.U, mainly from the three surrounding State-members (Belgium, Germany and France). The total absence of customs since decades (1968), and the more recent Schengen Agreements makes the crossing of those intra-E.U. administrative borders nearly invisible.

Today, it’s close to 250.000 workers that are commuting, daily, from surrounding European regions to Luxembourg, so 47% of the total work force of the Grand-duchy is actually coming from its “economic hinterland“, the “Greater-Region”.

With time, the Sar-Lor-Lux extended to the Luxembourg province in Belgium, and the “Rheinland-Pfalz” (Rhineland-Palatinate) german Länder:

Today, the Greater-Region is an official “trans-border” region of the European Union, with even broader limits:
